Progress Prompts - 9/29/2003

Progress Prompts:

What is your ideal goal weight? How many pounds do you need to lose in order to reach your goal weight? Do you think your goal weight is realistic enough for your age and your body frame? Why?

My ideal goal weight is 115 pounds, about 5 lbs. less than what I weigh now. Right now I'm in the middle/upper end of what is healthy for my height (5'2") and 115 is on the lower end. In addition, I'd like to have a 5 pound "insurance" for PMS bloat, bad eating days, and I can stand the way I look at exactly 120, but not 125. It is SO hard to lose those last 5 pounds that I might someday be content with a more muscular 120, but I haven't come to that yet. I'm still optimistic that I can reach and maintain my goal weight.

Sexy Saturday - Week XXX

sexysat2.gif

What activity (not necessarily sexual) is a turn on for you?
Watching hockey, massages, getting drunk...more later if I can think of anything else.

This is how it starts

Unless you've been living under a rock, you'd know that childhood obesity is a huge problem affecting kids today. Tonight, I was out for dinner at a Japanese restaurant and at the table next to mine there was a young boy, no more than 6 years old who ate an entire bento box dinner, which included:

miso soup
salad
chicken teriyaki (crispy fried skin)
stir fried veggies
rice
gyoza (fried dumplings)
california rolls
tempura (deep fried)

This kid also drank a Coke. His dinner was probably well over 1000 calories with more processed carbs, fat and sugar than I'd care to consume in a day, much less in one meal.
Why are parents allowing their children to eat that way? The kid wasn't really overweight, but I'd hate to see what he looks like in a few years. I think by far the best things parents can do to help combat childhood obesity is to set a good example by exercising and eating healthily, and by not having junky shit food around the house. It's pretty common sense advice. Unfortunately, my parents are basically sedentary slugs but I choose to be different from them and have a much healthier lifestyle.

Job update

My new job sucks big fucking ass. Thank god I only work there one night a week. The pay is less than half of what I make with my private students as well. When they hired me, they said I'd have to sign some contract saying I'd be there for a year but I haven't signed anything yet. While it's not very nice, it should mean that I can bolt as long as I'm not under a contract, right? I may have to run if last week was a harbinger of things to come.

Motivate me

I stepped on the scale after having not weighed myself for at least a week...

*drum roll*

118!!!!!!!

That's only 3 pounds from my goal weight...I headed off to the gym, worked my ass off, and was kind of rushed for lunch and was tempted to get a slice of Mediterranean pizza. Then my next thought was, "Do you want to gain back those 3 pounds that took you at least 6 months to lose?"

I went home and had a salad instead, and shit, it tasted good! :pleased

The good news is that the only part of the exam I have to redo is the fucking technique. :dead

All We Got Is Da Bad Shit

OMG, this is the funniest thing I've read in awhile: :rotflmao

OTTAWA (AP) — Some of the first patients to smoke Health Canada's government-approved marijuana say it's "disgusting" and they want their money back.

"It's totally unsuitable for human consumption," said Jim Wakeford, 58, an AIDS patient in Gibsons, British Columbia.

Wakeford and Barrie Dalley, a 52-year-old Toronto man who uses marijuana to combat the nausea associated with AIDS, are returning their 30-gram bags, and Dalley is demanding his money back — $150 plus taxes. Wakeford is returning his unpaid bill for two of the bags with a letter of complaint.

Ten patients have registered with Health Canada to buy marijuana directly from the government to alleviate their medical symptoms. Another 39 applications are pending.

The department was compelled to begin direct distribution in July, following an Ontario court order this year that said needy patients should not be forced to get their marijuana on the streets or from authorized growers, who themselves obtain seeds or cuttings illegally.

The marijuana is being grown for Health Canada deep underground in a vacant mine section in Flin Flon, Manitoba, by Prairie Plant Systems on a $5.75-million contract.

No patients have complained directly to Health Canada so far, spokeswoman Krista Apse said, and the department will not accept returns or provide refunds.

I ain't no singer

I've been trying to narrow down my song choices for the Newmarket Voice Festival. I said before the exam flunking shit happened that I was going to sing in this festival. Here's what I've got so far:

Songs from movies
Only Hope

Spirituals
Rise Up Shepherd and Follow

Modern Folk Songs
Homeward Bound
Across the Wide Missouri

Musical Theatre
I really can't decide here. I want to sing something that's not very well known, but one of my absolute favourites (Home) definitely doesn't fall under that category. I can get away with choosing 2 songs from this category; I can enter one in a novice class and the other in a regular musical theatre class. Someday, if I find sheet music with the printed lyrics, I'd love to sing Inte Jag (Someone Else's Story in Swedish). It would totally blow everyone away. :sing

Home (Beauty and the Beast)
Someone Else's Story (Chess)
Heaven Help My Heart (Chess)
Nobody's Side (Chess)
A New Life (Jekyll & Hyde)
Hold On (The Secret Garden)

Getting Edumacated

I've signed up for courses in Basic Fitness Theory and Fitness Leader Certification Training!

This is by no means 'big time' like ACE or Canfit Pro but it is a start! I've been to so many classes where I've thought, "I can totally do a better job than this instructor," so it's about time I got certified!

The classes start in early November. I am really excited! I've been teaching music for my entire professional career and it's definitely time for something new.

The amusingly ironic thing about these classes is that some of them run all day Saturday, which will cause me to miss my usual morning workout on that day.

Party Platforms

Although I'm cynical enough to believe that very few, if any, of the campaign promises made by the candidates in Ontario's upcoming provincial election will ever come to fruition, I am impressed at some of the statements made by Liberal leader Dalton McGuinty in this article:

"Haul out the junk-food vending machines — our schools will no longer be the suppliers of junk for recess."

Childhood obesity and general health and wellness for everyone are issues that I've recently become very passionate on. Why anyone would choose to be sedentary, eat junk, and cause themselves preventable health problems is beyond me.

"I want them [children] to become acquainted with music and art; I want them to participate in physical education; I'm looking for more than just automatons, I'm looking for citizens with an appreciation for other things which contribute to a richer society."

Being a musician and a music teacher, I am for anything that promotes the arts in the schools. School is not just about preparing for the work force and being part of The System.

Thirdly, his concern over The System churning out work drones is promising. I'm wondering where he stands on issues such as physical conformity, but it should go hand in hand with promoting free thinking.

WiW - 9/3/2003

What are your excuses for eating something you shouldn't or for not working out? What is the best and/or worst excuse you've ever heard?

I accept NO excuses from myself for not working out. I went to the gym even after staying up all night during the summer. Same with eating. It doesn't take any more time to eat wisely. Even if you are too pressed for time to cook and decide to go out to eat, it doesn't take one minute longer to go to Swiss Chalet drive-thru and get a quarter chicken with green salad than to drive to McDicks and get a Big Mac combo with supersize grease sticks. Yesterday on my favourite weight loss forum, this girl seriously whined about not having enough time to be healthy. That is the biggest crock of shit I've ever heard. Even after some helpful posts, she went and got a gym membership, but then whined more about how hard it was going to be to find the time to go work out. You set your priorities. Being healthy happens to be near the top in my list. If it's not, shutyertrap, because I don't want to hear those excuses.

What's in a name?

Ever wonder how I came to be known as Zorbs? Well, wonder no more!

Corporate whore

On Saturday, I spied this really classy Starbucks location that I'd never been to before, located in the old Albert Britnell bookstore on Yonge Street, just next to the reference library. It was one of those old fashioned stores with heavy wooden shelves, and echoey marble floors. Starbucks has tried to maintain the old-fashioned feel of the place by keeping the original fixtures, but you can't help feeling like such a corporate whore sitting there sipping your grande non-fat latte.

Later, Dan and I concocted oh so yummy cow pie :cow (aka Shepherd's Pie) with Bisquick biscuits.

After dinner, I went to meet the infamous grapes from irc and hung out there until 11-ish.

And that was how my oh-so-exciting Labour Day weekend ended.
And because Dan hates it, I'm going to complain about how nasty my hair looks today.

MY HAIR LOOKS LIKE POO!!!!

I'll go shower now.

review: BOSU trainer

bosu.jpgI was so excited when I saw that the hotel health club had one of these yesterday. However, not expecting it to be there, I couldn't think of many exercises to do on the BOSU (which is an acronym for Both Sides Up) and only did a few squats (side and regular), a boat pose (as demonstrated in the picture), and a set of pushups (I did it wrong, didn't know you were supposed to have the bubble side down :blush).

The verdict is, I hurt, even from doing so few exercises. Muscle hurtin' is such a great thing! The BOSU is really easy to use. It turns out that basically any floor exercise can be done on it to give that element of instability to give your core muscles an extra workout. Unfortunately, at $129.99 US a pop, they don't come cheap, and I don't think my regular gym will be getting one anytime soon.
