Hell Must've Frozen Over

1. I did a quiz.
2. I actually have things to blog about today.
3. I watched a movie on TV. Of my own free will!

Long time

deviousdevil.gif

Wow, when's the last time I did a quiz?

Roll back the clock

Ring, ring...

I rolled over in bed and picked up the phone.

"Hello?" I mumbled sleepily.
"Where ARE you?!?!?! It's a quarter to 12!!"
"OH SHIT!!!" I screamed, since I was supposed to have been at church by 11.

I jumped out of bed, hit the ground running, and was there in 5 minutes flat.
Good thing too, because in the front row was a former Leaf. (now retired)

All because I didn't think I needed to set the alarm. Let's roll back the clock and try that again, shall we?

Weekly Wrap-Up - Comics

The Weekly Wrap-Up:

1. What kind of comics do you like? Sunday/daily funnies? Comic books? Graphic novels? Why?
I like the newspaper funnies, but unfortunately they are a daily pleasure that don't last long enough. Collections are better but I can still polish off a book in under an hour.

2. What is your earliest memory of reading or seeing comics? What character was your favorite as a child? Describe any memories of playing and/or dressing up as your favorite comic character!
I have vauge memories of making my mom read me a cartoon called Herman when I was about 3-4 and laughing my ass off, but I'm sure I didn't understand the jokes.

3. What comic titles do you enjoy now? Why? Which one(s) do you despise? Why? What comic are you absolutely dedicated to reading daily/weekly/monthly?
For Better or For Worse, Sherman's Lagoon, Adam @ Home, Mutts. I :hearts Mutts! I read all the comics in the paper, although those are my favourites. I even read Marmaduke, which is SO not funny, and The Dinette Set, which pokes fun at rednecks.

4. Who is your favorite comic character now as an adult? Why? Did your attitude toward this character change from the first time you read/saw him/her? Why or why not?
My favourites are Earl and Mooch from Mutts. They are SO sweet!

5. Are comic books and graphic novels a valid form a literature? Why or why not?
Sure they are! I consider magazines and romance novels to be valid literature as well, so why not comics?

Welcome back, Pat

Why must he be playing for the bad guys?

Remember his 1996 season? I sure do! (please try to ignore my bad hair, thanks)

update: Final score: 5-1 Jays.
As for his performance, Hentgen summed it up rather succinctly. "The arm is fine; the results were just terrible," he said.

Here's what I have to say about this:

1. bariatric surgery - more people to sue, yay!

2. I don't understand why some people don't like working out. Isn't feeling flexible and not short of breath after running up a flight of stairs, and looking good in your clothes worth getting sweaty and smelly for 3 hours a week?
Anyone who's known me for more than 5 years knows that when I was in high school I looked like a pipe cleaner - 5'2" and under 100 pounds. I ate massive amounts of junk food nearly every day and never exercised. I thought that sweating in gym class was a sign of weakness.
Fast forward to the present, and I must control my portions and work out 3-4 times a week to maintain my weight of 130 pounds. I am not ashamed of how much I weigh, I like having muscles and being able to do stuff without sucking wind, and most of all, I like being able to laugh at people who whine about being fat and don't bother to do a fucking thing about it!

Thank you. I'm off to the gym now.

Monday Mission - 9/16/2002

Monday Mission:

1. Do you have a favorite piece of poetry or prose written by someone else? Care to share it?
Not really, I don't read for intellectual purposes, but I do like some of the Deep Thoughts shared in some Yoga Journal articles.

2. In High School, did you enjoy creative writing? Do you currently do any other writing in addition to your Blog?
No, I actually dislike writing because I don't think I can ever express the thoughts in my head in words.

3. Have you ever noticed that the Blog entries you least expect to get the most comments do, and those you expect to generate a lot of feedback don't? Which Blog entry of yours surprised you by getting a lot of comments? Which one did you think would generate a lot but didn't?
There have been a few, but lately, this post got some comments and I didn't expect to have any...I think it is because of my lack of skill with words that my 'deeper thought' posts never get any comments.

4. Sometimes you get a chance to make a lifestyle change that has a huge impact on the course your life takes. That is, a moment where something became very clear to you, and that realization changed your life, such as: the need to leave a relationship, to stop an addiction, to bond with someone, to start a new career, and so on. Have you ever had an "awakening" moment in your life?
When I got stretch marks on my inner thighs 3 years ago, I ran to the gym and have been a workout fiend ever since.

5. Then there are other times where you can have a huge impact on someone else's life. You suggest they see a doctor, stop them from taking that last drink, or maybe just say some kind words at the moment. Have you made a lasting positive impact on the life of someone else?
No, because I am just not significant enough to make an impact on anyone.

6. Are there any charities or organizations which you support? How did you come to be involved with them?
No, because I am a selfish bitch.

7. Care to collaborate with me? Help me out and write the rest of this poem:

I drifted though a dream last night,
visions full of colors bright.
My thoughts began to drift to you,
and in an instant we were two.

I touched your hand,
We began to blend,
Filled with a feeling
that should have no end.

I don't do poetry.

Weekly Wrap-up - Superstitions

The Weekly Wrap-up:

1. Today is Friday the 13th -- are you uneasy when these days happen? Why or why not? If you take notice of Friday the 13th, what do you do on these days that's different from other Fridays the whatever?
I notice but I don't do anything - I :hearts the number 13! Remember, 13 is only an unlucky number if you're a goalie!

2. Describe any superstitions you've picked up from your family. Were they generational or part of your ethnic heritage? How? What superstitions have you adopted on your own?
In Chinese culture, numbers are very important, based on the their phonetic sound. There are tons of combinations that make very lucky or unlucky sounds. In general 3 and 8 are great and 4 is bad, so license plates and house numbers and stuff with "bad" numbers are avoided. I don't have any weird superstitions like the way Vin taps his pop cans 3 times before opening..not that I know of.

3. When you were a child, were there any superstitions you truly believed? What were those superstitions? Describe the occasion when you started disbelieving?
I don't know when I stopped believing this, but I used to hold my breath going by cemeteries till I was about 10 or so. In high school, I wore the same outfit all the time for tests.

4. What superstitions amuse you? Why? What superstitions make you uncomfortable? Why?
I haven't come across any that make me uncomfortable, but I think the ones that athletes have are pretty amusing, like Pat Roy talking to the goalposts, and wearing a certain item of clothing during a good streak.

5. How are superstitions part of your country, culture or neighborhood? How have they evolved? What culture's superstitions fascinate you? Frustrate you?
See #2.

Busy Girl

My schedule is fully booked for today. I'm heading out to the gym in 20 minutes, followed by my piano lesson, then CJB is picking me up so I can do my thing at his rehearsal. Then my day ends with some teaching. It seems like word is getting around of my exceptional talent as a page turner, as I have another gig flippin' the books at Chris' concert on Sunday.

Tribute

Please feel free to SAVE the image for your own use; link back to http://www.zorblog.com. Thanks!

Affirmative may be justified
Take from one give to another
The goal is to be unified
Take my hand be my brother
The payment silenced the masses
Sanctified by oppression
Unity took a backseat
Sliding further in regression
One
The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind
Society blind by color
Why hold down one to raise another
Discrimination now on both sides
Seeds of hate blossom further
The world is heading for mutiny
When all we want is unity
We may rise and fall, but in the end
We meet our fate together
One
The only way is one
I feel angry I feel helpless
Want to change the world
I feel violent I feel alone
Don't try and change my mind

Monday Mission - 9/9/2002

Monday Mission:

1. Where were you and what was happening in your life the moment when you first became aware of what was happening at the World Trade Center in New York City last September 11th? What was the first thing you did when you heard the news?
I had just gotten home after driving Mom to work. I was laughing because on the way home I saw someone that I knew from chat on the road going the other direction. My friend IM'ed me and I didn't believe her at first, but then I turned on the TV. A whole bunch of us congregated in a chat room.

2. When those truly responsible for the attack are apprehended, what do you think would be the most fitting form of justice?
Change their hearts so they can see the error of their ways.

3. This will probably be much like when our parents respond to "Where were you when JFK was shot?"- an event never forgotten by those who were there. But how do you think the history books should present the 9-11 attacks? Should it be included for all future generations? How can we truly convey the shock, the outrage, the emotions and pain of that day to the children of our children?
I think other forms of media, video footage, photos, written first-hand accounts will convey the emotions to future generations better than in the past, since we have these forms of media available to us today.

4. No one in that building, in the Pentagon, or on the planes (other than the terrorists) knew that 9-11 would be their last day to be alive. For me, it brought home the reality that I could be gone at anytime, without any warning. Now, I really want each day to have some value. Did the events of 9-11 bring about a change in the way you live your life?
Yes. Try to live each day if it were your last, because it very well may be.

5. Several who loved to fly in planes will not step foot in one anymore. Many parents are more protective of their children. A year later, do you find yourself feeling more secure than back then? Or is it just a matter of time before something else happens?
The only time I felt unsafe in the past year was when travelling in the US.

6. The best way for me to honor the those impacted by the attack will be to refrain from any media that day. No papers, no radio and especially no television. Others will light candles, and others will attend special services. What, if anything, will you do to personally reflect on the tragedy?
I would like to see the Yankee Stadium memorial service again. That was the most moving ceremony I ever saw in my life.

7. One of the visuals that touched me the most were the walls and walls full of hand made "Missing" posters. What image will you always have in your mind when you recall the events of 9-11?
The one of people fleeing over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Weekly Wrap-up - Music Revisited

The Weekly Wrap-up:

1. What kind(s) of music do you listen to regularly? Does it change at all depending on your mood or the moods of those around you (like playing upbeat music as a motivator)?
If you take a look at my playlist, you'll see that I have everything from Britney Spears (ONE song, OK?!?!? :shrug) to Mozart to Slipknot. Of course what I prefer to listen to on any day depends on my mood, but I really like to load my entire mp3 collection, set Winamp to play at random and see where that takes me.

2. Do you listen to the radio (NPR and other talk radio, too, not just music stations) or CDs/audiobooks more while in the car? What do you consider to be good "driving music"? Any particular bands, songs or albums that seem to make long trips go faster?
I don't listen to the radio at all; I don't find there to be any good radio stations in this area. I have a "heavy rotation" of CD's for driving - this is what I have in my sunvisor organizer currently:
- New Killer America, Skrape
- The Lonely Position of Neutral, Trust Company
- Self-Titled, Headstrong
- Lost Angels, 3rd Strike (GAAAAAAAAAAAAABE!!)
- Available in All Colors, One Minute Silence (no Mazzy :cry)
- Self-Titled, Stone Sour
- Sevas Tra, Otep

3. Anymore, a lot of concert performances sound close to their professionally recorded conterparts. Do you thing this is true to some extent? Why or why not? Which do you prefer - live music or recorded music? Why?
I used to hear live recordings and be disappointed that they didn't sound like the CD, but now I know to appreciate the live concert as its own thing, it's like comparing apples and oranges.

4. With the abundance of music available to download, and the tools to make CDs on your own, how often do you actually buy CDs? Is there any artist or group that you prefer buying their CDs instead of downloading/burning a copy? What was the last CD you bought?
I still buy about the same number of CD's, the only thing I do less with the advent of mp3 is I no longer buy a CD for one song, that's what downloading is for. The last CD I bought was Stone Sour, it rox!

5. We all have maybe one similar music interest as our parents, especially if we grew up in a home where music was played often. So, 'fess up - what artist/group do both you and your parents like? Why do you like them? Also, do your parents like anything you listen to?
My parents and I definitely don't have any artists in common that we like, but my parents like classical. Obviously because of my education I like it too, but my parents tend to go for the popular stuff, whereas I have had exposure to all sorts of art music. I'll admit that I don't mind the soundtracks that my dad listens to, but I DO mind the fact that he'll listen to the same CD on repeat several times in the course of a day! When that happens I blast my stuff on headphones or make a strategic retreat into my room.

I hate you.

It is my mission to make as many people hate me today. Gonna make people hate me more than I hate them. I don't think I'm doing a very good job, as I always fail in everything I do.

Now excuse me while I go OD on drugs and mailbomb a few people.

Firsts

If there were more kids living nearby, I'd have been sitting at the window this morning watching them head off to school.

Driving to teach today, it's just another day for me. It's still a foreign to wake up on Labour Day and not have a sense of dread and apprehension over the impending school year.

I'm rememberizing about other first days today...

Grade 1 - cried because I couldn't find my way OUT of school after the day was over.

Grade 7 - thought we were l33t

Grade 9 - it RAINED, my gawd did it ever rain! Memories of getting off the bus looking like a drowned rat.

university - I didn't meet you until the 2nd day.

teaching at OCOM - Paul tried to drive me nuts! :spork

September 02, 2002

Monday Mission - 9/2/2002

Monday Mission:

1. What's the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to you on a date?
Nothing embarrassing has ever happened to me.

2. Do you eat your veggies?
Of course, I like veggies.

3. Most people are comfortable going to the bathroom in front of at least one person. Has anyone ever used the restroom in front of you that you wish wouldn't have? What happened and how bad was it?
Pass. I usually turn my back or close the door and talk through the door.

4. Have you ever had a bad online transaction? You know, the item wasn't what you thought it would be, you got totally ripped-off, no refunds, it just plain sucked? What's the story there?
Infin1. It took them MONTHS to send stuff, despite having ordered it adequately in advance. I called them to yell, and the manager tried to make me pay for the rush shipping! Unfortunately, they have a damn good selection of stuff. :biting

5. Ever have a current love find any old love letters (or similar item) you kept that probably should have been thrown away? How did that turn out?
An ex's underwear. Again, no details.

6. A secretary at work was telling me about a trip she took to Mardi Gras. She showed off her beaded necklaces and proudly said she "earned' each and every one of them (for those not familiar with this tradition, ladies walking up Burbon St. in New Orleans will flash people who are upon the balconies, in return the guys will throw them worthless plastic necklaces). I was shocked, I had no idea this quiet gal had a wild side. Was there ever a time when you did something totally outrageous because you knew no one would know who you were, or maybe didn't care even if they did?
Yeah, but most of you know what I do already. If you don't, you're probably better off not knowing.

7. Hey, what happened to you last night? I waited forever!
I didn't wake up again till 3:45am, that's a pretty dead hour on the net.

September 01, 2002

Old but hey! it's true

I left for university five years ago today. My, how time does fly!
