WiW - 11/12/2003

wiw.gif

I wasn't gonna do WiW this week, but it's hard not to when Yours Truly is mentioned in the question.. :smile

Where do you stand on weight related surgery? Are you in favor of it? Why or why not? Do you agree with it in certain circumstances and what are those circumstances? Would do you it if you had to?

I am absolutely against weight loss surgery, regardless of the situation. Most people are deluding themselves when they opt for surgery saying that they've tried everything and failed. Have they followed a healthy eating plan and integrated it into their lifestyle? Worked out at 60% of their maximum heart rate according to the F.I.T.T. principle?

Feh, I don't think so. Get your ass out of the butt groove of your couch, get moving and eat healthy.

Well said. I'm with you.

exercise and proper diet is the best way to weight loss. Use surgery only for medical reasons. :wave :wave

That's a little harsh. I wish I could agree with you but I guess I'm a little more compassionate.

It's my lack of compassion that comes from never having weighed 300 pounds.

Which says alot about you.

I just wanted to add, that was an extremely low blow. I may be big but I'm a better person than you will ever be.

I'm just saying...that I do not understand what it is like to be 300 pounds. That's a fact, not an insult.

I don't do WW's but I wanted to comment :)

I'm 99% against WLS, I don't think it is a means to an end and I do agree that some think it will solve all their problems. However, it doesn't.

There is a reason someone weighs 2x or 3x their normal weight, emotional and physical reasons. Sure WLS will change the physical (most times, I know of a friend that had it...she lost for a bit but gained it all back and then some) but it won't change or fix the reason why someone has let themself get to the point of feeling that WLS is the only way left to go.

Also, look at Fred! He was a very large person, he didn't need surgery to get back to being a healthy him. Look at Robyn, she's getting there - didn't/doesn't need the surgery either.

I've never weighed enough to even think of surgery so I have no clue how one feels at a weight that people think that WLS is their only option. Sure when I'm done I will have lost 80lbs, but to me that isn't enough to justify it in my mind. Maybe if I weighed more, I might have a different answer, I don't know.

But I do agree with Zorbs in that overweight/obese people need get out there and move and watch their food intake - it really is that simple. Sure if you weigh 100+ lbs it might seem like it will take forever to take it off naturally, and some people's resolves just can't take it...but I dunno - at this point I'm still 99% against it.

I babble :)

I don't think it's ever been said that overweight people don't need to move and watch their intake. I think everyone agrees with that. What I get angry at is that people don't seem to understand that one option doesn't work for everyone.

I have to agree with Carla on this one. I'm a bio-med student & there are many people who are genetically obese (leptin deficient) & as of yet there is no proven treatement (the current drugs being studied seem to cause diabetes & other disorders by inhibiting some of the body's natural processes).
